Maybe you’ve heard about Oxford Photo Walk (OPW) from a friend, maybe you found us on Instagram, Facebook, or maybe you just googled “photo clubs in Oxford” and we popped up. And now you’re wondering – what’s OPW all about, and is it worth my time joining the group?
Well, to put an end to your curiosity, here’s a list of 10 reasons why we think your answer should be a resounding YES!
Every month we’ll choose a new location and theme for our photo walk. Sometimes our walks will be seasonal (e.g. visit a Christmas market or an autumnal walk around Harcourt Arboretum), sometimes they’ll focus on event/street photography (e.g. the May Day celebrations), and sometimes we might choose architecture as a theme. In other words, there’s something for everyone, and there’s always the chance to discover (or re-discover!) a new part of town.
We welcome member suggestions, so if there’s a location you think OPW should explore please email us your ideas to email@example.com with the subject line “Photo Walk Ideas”.
OPW invites enthusiastic photographers from all walks of life to join us, whether you’re native to Oxford or not, 18 or 80, a beginner, amateur, or professional photographer – everyone is welcome! We therefore hope that there’s a good chance you’ll meet friendly, creative, like-minded people. And maybe you’ll even make a good friend or two!
We Don’t Discriminate
Whether you have a point-and-shoot, a DSLR, a Polaroid camera, or a smart phone camera, you are welcome to join us on a walk, and to share your work via our social media channels. All cameras are welcome!
The Best Things In Life Are Free
So that you can find out what we’re all about, as an introductory offer, your first Oxford Photo Walk is completely FREE. Hooray! Thereafter, each photo walk will cost £5.
Our photo walks are a great way to get out of the house, and get some light exercise! 😉 There’s not any intense hiking involved (unless we specifically say so for a particular walk) and most of our walks will take place in the city, so they are appropriate for most fitness levels.
In this beautiful and historic city of ours, we’re often too busy rushing from A-B, and dodging those huge crowds of tourists, that after a while it’s easy to just take this city for granted. (Or is that just me? No, I didn’t think so! 😉 )
On our photo walks we’ll slow the pace right down, so that you can enjoy and re-fresh your view of the city. By changing your focus (both literally and metaphorically!) maybe you’ll even discover something new that you’ve never noticed before?! And of course, it’s a great opportunity to spend a bit of time getting to know all the functions on your camera, and sharing tips or getting advice from those around you.
If Organised Group Walks Aren’t Your Thing
If you can’t or don’t want to make it to our photo walks, but would still like to network with other local photographers, the good news is you can! Simply join the chat via our Facebook Group, Facebook Page, and Instagram. You may post articles, advertise your own photography workshops, tell us about your exhibitions and events, share your photos, and add yourself to our Photographer’s Directory so others can easily find you.
You Never Stop Learning
You can pick up interesting ideas from the articles our admin and members post to our Facebook Group wall, and from other people on the photo walks. Here, we positively encourage spirited discussions about the various pros and cons of different cameras, editing software, filters, and other equipment. Sharing and learning is important to us.
Your 5 Minutes of Fame
The winners of our monthly photo walk contests will feature in a special interview (Member Spotlight) which will appear as a blog post on our website, and will then be shared to our social media channels. Who knows, next time could be your moment of glory!
Networking & Collaboration
We’re always open to new ideas! Are you the admin of another photography association, a business, or an artist/professional photographer, and would you like to collaborate with OPW on an event or project? Please email us.
So, there you have it. We hope we’ve convinced you to join us? 😉
